My family and I stayed in Elounda in 1996 and again in 2006. We made contact with old friends who still remembered us and welcomed us. We love the little village and its people.
what I found alarming however, on my recent visit is that they are renovating Spinalonga island and that they have wiped out all trace of the leper colony instead, wanting to restore the fortress to its former glory. My pictures in 1996 reflect a tragic, eery place where no birds sing and a sadness and desolation fall about the place - the leper houses were intact with broken furniture and the graves reflected recent removal of remains. I was humbled and my heart went out to all those poor people shunned by the Greek society. When I went once more in 2006 I was very angry that they had literally wiped out all trace of the colony - preferring to fancy the old houses up with blue and yellow shop fronts and newly plastered walls. As if a lick of paint can wipe out the cruelness of the Greek government! If they had done their homework they would have found that leprecy was curable even then! I left the island feeling that the visitors were enjoying a day trip on the backs of those poor people and I feel that it is a slight on their memory. Other than that, I loved my stay with the locals and would still go back to Elounda - but not to Spinalonga, I have my principles now. Tour Operator: First Choice
