My daughter and I just spent a delightful sojourn at the Mendip Lodge Hotel in Frome, Somerset. The buildings are spread out through vast grounds, overlooking the countryside. It is all a little shabby and worn, but this adds to the comfortable, homely atmosphere. As a smoker a bonus was having a sliding glass door from the room opening into the garden! The breakfast buffet was the best I have yet enjoyed in England, with oodles of bacon, pork sausages, scrambled eggs, fried bread and mushrooms. All fresh, I might add. The dinner, which we tried one night, was very much plain English cooking ... not particularly inspiring, but adequate if you do not feel like going out. The hotel location is on the very edge of the town of Frome, with a touch of town on one side, and fields on the other. Very convenient for lots of Somerset attractions, especially the famed Longleat house and safari park. Frome itself is a pretty market town with not many shops or restaurants, but worth a morning's walk to explore. Our double room incl. breakfast was £80 a night.
