Bargain budget holidays

Cheap is often thought of as synonymous with tacky, but a cheap holiday can be far from that. With so many destinations to choose from, your holiday can be anything from a relaxing beach break to a cultured experience. Here are some of the best places to visit on a budget.

The South of France

Holidaying in the south of France is very affordable, and some great deals on accommodation can be found with a little searching. Flights to Perpignan near the Spanish border are around £40 return from the UK if you book early enough with a low cost airline, and the region is a hit with holidaymakers from around Europe, and often further afield. The best way to make a holiday to the region a cheap one is to travel in a group and rent a villa, one for eight people will cost around £1000 for the week, making accommodation only £125 per person. Towards the south of France and north of Spain is the Catalan region, a fascinating place to visit. The official Catalan region lies in Spain, but around 300,000 French Catalans live in the South of France, bringing with them the Catalan cuisine to places such as Collioure, a lovely, unspoilt bay town with some excellent architecture. The influence of the Moors can still be seen in some of the buildings and the beach is a calm and serene place to bathe amid the backdrop of the old fortifications of what was once a hotly fought over port.

The Balearic Islands

The Balearics offer surprisingly good value holidays considering the natural beauty of the area and the quality of the climate, not just in the summer months but also in the off season. The main islands are Menorca, Majorca, Formentera and Ibiza, with smaller islands making up the rest of the community. All of the islands have stretches of beautiful coastline, Majorca having 500km for example. Lying in the Balearic Sea means the conditions for swimming are excellent, as the sea warms to a good temperature in the summer months. Flights to the islands from the UK cost around £60 return if you book early, making the area very cheap to get to. There are a variety of accommodation options to choose from and you should do a little research to ensure you find the right one for your budget. There are all inclusive resorts on the islands, usually situated right on the beach and with stunning views of the sea. Villas and apartments are available, and can work out cheaply if you travel in a group. Campsites are also a good way to keep costs down if you're working to a tight budget, and in the summer months it can be a great way to experience the outdoors for a minimal price.
