Estoril Travel Guide

The trendy resort town of Estoril lies sixteen miles (26km) west of Lisbon, and is a cosmopolitan holiday destination with a promenade along three narrow coarse sandy beaches, luxury hotels, championship golf courses and some excellent restaurants. During World War II exiled royalty from all over Europe took refuge here and whiled away their time gambling in the Estoril's casino, which is one of the largest in Europe. The town is also known for its summer handicraft fair, and the nearby Estoril Autodrome, which draws motor racing enthusiasts.

Shopping

Shopping is limited in Estoril and is mainly confined to mini-market grocers serving the locals, along with a few craft shops and vendors along the beachfront. Souvenirs are available but, for a real shopping spree while on holiday, visitors should head for the large Cascais Shopping Centre a few miles away.

Restaurants

Estoril boasts a vibrant food scene that blends traditional Portuguese flavours with international influences. Seafood reigns supreme, with fresh fish, octopus and bacalhau (salted cod) featuring in many dishes; cosy cafes and upscale restaurants line the waterfront, offering panoramic views. Local specialties such as pastéis de nata (custard tarts) are a must-try.

Nightlife

The main drawcard after dark is the famed casino, which not only caters for gamblers and slot machine addicts, but also offers a flashy cabaret show. When it comes to clubs and pubs, the options are better in nearby Cascais.

Holiday activities

Beyond the beautiful beaches (which can get quite crowded in summer), Estoril has plenty to keep holidaymakers busy. Golfers will feel right at home, with a classic championship course drawing enthusiasts year-round, and tennis lovers will appreciate the town's top-notch facilities, which are on full display during the annual Tennis Open each April. For a cultural break, there's a charming music museum to explore, and boat trips provide a scenic escape. When visitors are ready for a change of pace, they can take a stroll along the esplanade to nearby Cascais for even more to see and do.

Any negatives?

Estoril is a sedate seaside destination and isn't suited to children or young party animals.
