Los Penitentes Travel Guide

Named after the curious snow formations called 'penitentes' that resemble figures kneeling in prayer, this modest ski resort takes its name from a natural phenomenon found high in the Andes. Located around 110 miles (180 km) west of Mendoza, along the route to the Chilean border, Los Penitentes offers about 300 hectares (741 acres) of skiable terrain across 28 marked runs. The resort caters to all levels, from beginner slopes to more advanced terrain, and occasionally hosts local competitions and training sessions.

Though smaller than some of Argentina's better-known resorts, Los Penitentes is well-equipped with ski schools, a kids' snow garden, rental facilities, and a few shops and restaurants. The ski season generally runs from mid-June through late August, depending on snowfall.

Shopping

Los Penitentes has a handful of small shops offering souvenirs, ski gear and basic supplies. Travellers looking for more variety or luxury items should plan to shop in Mendoza, where there are malls and specialty stores. The resort's limited retail area is convenient for on-the-spot needs, but it's not a shopping destination.

Restaurants

There are several restaurants and cafeterias at the resort, most located in or near hotels. Dining options range from hearty mountain meals to simple snacks and drinks. A few slope-side eateries serve hot drinks such as coffee and hot chocolate, providing a welcome break during the ski day. Food is generally good value, though variety is limited.

Nightlife

Nightlife in Los Penitentes is fairly quiet. A few hotels host occasional live music or themed nights, and there are one or two small bars where visitors can unwind. Those looking for a high-energy party scene will likely be better off at larger resorts such as Las Leñas or Cerro Catedral.

Holiday activities

Skiing and snowboarding are the main attractions at Los Penitentes. The resort also offers ski and snowboard instruction for all levels, and a snow garden where children can play in supervised areas while adults hit the slopes. Outside of the skiing, there are limited alternative activities, so the resort is best suited for those focused on winter sports.
