Getting Around
Many streets in the old city have been pedestrianised and Basel is fairly compact, so tourists tend to get around on foot. Walking tours are only recommended for the moderately fit, however, as some parts of the city have steep inclines. Bicycles are available for hire, and the extensive bus and tram network is easy to use. Visitors can purchase tickets online, and from machines at stops and stations; single tickets and day passes are available. Taxi apps such as Uber, Lyft, Ola and Didi are also options. Visitors should note that the large number pedestrians, trams, buses and bicycles make the city confusing to drive in, and that parking is scarce. Hiring a car is only recommended for excursions out of the city.
