Getting Around

Public transport in Hanoi mainly consists of buses, which are cheap but can be slow, crowded and hard to navigate for non-Vietnamese speakers. Taxis are widely available and are the safest way to get around, though visitors should be sure the metre is on and that they get the correct change.

Motorbike taxis (Xe Om) are a popular, affordable option, but the chaotic traffic can be overwhelming and visitors should be aware of the safety risks, as motorbike accidents are common. Renting a car is another common choice and travellers will usually hire a driver as well, as Vietnam doesn't officially recognise international driver's licenses.

The Hanoi Metro's Cat Linh-Ha Dong line offers a modern alternative for some routes, avoiding traffic. Cyclos (pedicabs) provide a leisurely ride, though fares should be agreed upon in advance, and many drivers don't speak English. Local ride-hailing apps, Grab and Be, are convenient and easy to use.
