Getting Around

Getting around Luanda can be a challenge, and for most visitors, the easiest way to travel is by private car. Rental cars are available at the airport, and hiring a car with a driver is often a safer and more relaxed option, especially for those unfamiliar with the city's traffic. Locals mostly use shared minibus taxis called candongueiros, which are painted pale blue and white. These are cheap and quick but can be confusing for newcomers. Ride-hailing apps such as Kubinga, T'Leva and Yango are a good alternative, offering safer and more convenient transport around the city. Motorbike taxis are also common, though they're best avoided at night. Buses and trains are available but are often overcrowded or unreliable, so they're not usually recommended for tourists. While public transport is still developing, getting around is manageable with some planning and a flexible approach.

Getting to the city

Visitors arriving in Luanda can take a local taxi from the airport or use a ride-hailing app. Taxis are available just outside the terminal, but if the meter isn't used, it's best to agree on the fare beforehand. Ride-hailing services such as Allo Taxi, Yango, Bolt, and Heetch operate in the city and usually accept credit card payments through the app. While public buses are an option, they tend to run infrequently and may not be convenient for those carrying luggage. For added convenience and safety, especially for late arrivals, it's recommended to arrange in advance for pickup by a hotel, sponsor or colleague.
