Armenia Travel Guide

Armenia is a fascinating and often overlooked destination with a rich and ancient history. It's one of the oldest countries in the world and was the first nation to adopt Christianity as a state religion, in the year 301 AD. Many of the country's most treasured landmarks are ancient churches and monasteries that have stood for centuries, reflecting its deep spiritual and cultural heritage.

One of the most iconic symbols of Armenia is Mount Ararat, a towering, snow-capped peak that now lies across the border in Turkey. Although no longer within Armenia's modern borders, the mountain holds great symbolic meaning for Armenians and features on the national emblem. It's also traditionally believed to be the resting place of Noah's Ark.

Modern-day Armenia is a small, landlocked country bordered by Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran. It represents only a small part of what was once historic Armenia. The capital, Yerevan, is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and was founded before ancient Rome. Today, it remains the cultural and political heart of the nation.

The country is known for its striking natural beauty, with dramatic mountains, clear rivers, and peaceful rural landscapes. Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world, is a popular destination for swimming, fishing and lakeside relaxation.

Each region of Armenia offers something unique. Tavush, in the northeast, is known for its forests, mineral springs and resort towns such as Dilijan and Ijevan. In the Kotayk region, Tsakhkadzor is a popular winter ski resort. The southern region of Syunik features natural attractions such as Shaki Waterfall, along with historic sites such as Tatev Monastery and Karahunj, sometimes referred to as the Stonehenge of Armenia. The northern region of Lori is ideal for hiking and home to the UNESCO-listed monasteries of Sanahin and Haghpat. Just west of Yerevan lies Etchmiadzin, the spiritual centre of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

With its blend of ancient history, dramatic landscapes and welcoming culture, Armenia promises a travel experience that's both unique and unforgettable.
