Climate in Tasmania
Tasmania has a temperate maritime climate, shaped by the surrounding Southern Ocean, and the island rarely experiences major extremes of heat or cold. The prevailing weather moves from west to east, which means the west coast is the wettest part of the state, while the east coast enjoys a drier, milder and often sunnier climate.
Summer, from December to February, brings warm days and mild evenings, making it a pleasant time to explore the island's beaches and national parks. Winter, from June to August, can be stormy, and snow often dusts the mountain peaks, especially around July and August. Rain can fall at any time of year, although the weather is usually at its most settled between late summer and autumn, from February to April.
