Nosy Be Travel Guide
Nosy Be, meaning 'big island' in Malagasy, lies off Madagascar's northwest coast and is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. Known for its laid-back charm and warm waters, it's ideal for a romantic beach getaway and hosts some of Madagascar's busiest resort areas.
The island is famous for its white-sand beaches such as Andilana, Madirokely and Ambatoloaka, and its surrounding coral reefs make it a top spot for snorkelling and scuba diving. Inland, Nosy Be features volcanic lakes and lush tropical forest, with the Lokobe Reserve offering excellent birdwatching and the chance to see lemurs and other endemic species. Visitors can also explore Ylang-Ylang plantations, rum distilleries, hiking and mountain biking trails, and the Donia Music Festival, a four-day cultural event usually held in May.
Although Nosy Be can get busy, it retains a relaxed, unspoilt atmosphere that keeps travellers coming back.
