Getting Around

Perth has a public transport system called Transperth which operates buses, trains and ferries across the metropolitan area. Tickets and SmartRider cards work on all modes, allowing travel across buses, trains and ferries on a single valid fare.

The network is divided into fare zones, and fares are calculated based on the number of zones travelled. Within the city centre there is a Free Transit Zone for buses and trains, and a fleet of colour‑coded Central Area Transit (CAT) buses that are free and run frequently. Ferries operate on the Swan River connecting key points such as Elizabeth Quay and South Perth and use the same fare system. In the outer suburbs, valid fares are required, with SmartRider offering discounted rates.

Metered taxis can be hailed on the street, found at ranks or booked in advance. Car hire is widely available and cycling is popular with many designated routes. Rideshare services such as Uber and DiDi are also available, with dedicated pick‑up zones at the airport (note an airport pick‑up fee applies) and they can be booked via app for convenience and ease of door‑to‑door travel.
